You can create tables from scratch or by converting them from existing text. You can also embed a table within a table. When you create a table, the new table fills the width of the container text frame.

A table is inserted on the same line when the insertion point is at the beginning of the line, or on the next line, when the insertion point is in the middle of a line. Tables flow with surrounding text just as inline graphics do. For example, a table moves through threaded frames when the text above it changes in point size or when text is added or deleted.

However, a table cannot appear on a text-on-path frame. Jeff Witchell from InfiniteSkills. When you create a table in InDesign, you have the option to create the table within an existing text frame Using the Insert Table option.

Alternatively, you can create a table and allow InDesign to create the enclosing text frame Using the Create Table option. To draw a table within an existing text frame use the Type tool and place the insertion point where you want the table to appear.

When you use the Create Table option to create a table, you do not need to first create a text frame in your document. As soon as you draw the table on the document, InDesign creates a text frame the size of the table that you draw. InDesign creates a text frame the size of the drawn area and places the table within the text frame. The row height of a table is determined by the specified table style. For example, a table style may use cell styles to format different parts of the table.

If any of these cell styles include paragraph styles, the leading value of the paragraph styles determines the row height of that area. The slug is based on the leading value. In this context, a slug is the approximate height of the highlighting in selected text. If you create a table within a cell, you cannot use the mouse to select any part of the table that oversets the cell boundary.

Instead, expand the row or column; or place the insertion point in the first part of the table, and use keyboard shortcuts to move the insertion point and select text. When you use the Place command to import a Microsoft Word document that includes tables, or a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, imported data is an editable table.

You can use the Import Options dialog box to control the formatting. The Clipboard Handling preference settings determine how text pasted from another application is formatted.

If Text Only is selected, the information appears as unformatted tabbed text, which you can then convert to a table. If All Information is selected, the pasted text appears in a formatted table. If you want more control over formatting the imported table, or if you want to maintain spreadsheet formatting, use the Place command to import the table. You can also copy and paste tabbed text across a selection of table cells.

This technique is a great way to replace content while preserving formatting. For example, suppose you want to update the content of a formatting table in a monthly magazine. One possibility is to link to an Excel spreadsheet. Adobe Inc. The Tab Order dialog lists the order that a user moves through a form with either the Tab key or an assistive device from top to bottom.

Accessible PDF documents require, at a minimum, a document title and a brief description of the contents. Which PDF type you choose depends upon whether or not your document contains interactive elements such as forms, buttons, audio, or video. Although the formatting is the same for both PDF types, they offer different options in their respective dialog boxes.. The Adobe PDF Print format exports bookmarks and hyperlinks but not buttons, audio, video, or animation. You can only opt to include the appearance of these interactive elements — not their functionality — or to not include them at all.

To activate bookmarking, hyperlinks, cross- references, and buttons, set the Forms and Media option to Include All. All other settings in the dialog are optional and subject to your specific needs or preferences. You can then move on to the final few steps required in Acrobat. Looking at the tagging structure in the Acrobat Tags pane may help foster a better understanding of the connection between your InDesign preparation and the final PDF document.

Only the Tags panel ordering, as determined by the arrangement of content in the InDesign Articles panel, represents the reading order of the PDF content, regardless of the sequence shown in the Order panel or in the Acrobat Reflow mode. InDesign has no corresponding setting, so you must set the language in Acrobat.

You can make that change in the Initial View options of the Document Properties dialog. The structure created in the InDesign Articles panel is exported to the PDF file, but it is not automatically set as the order followed when tabbing through interactive elements like hyperlinks and form fields.

Highlight all of the documents page thumbnails, and then choose Page Properties from the Options menu in the Page Thumbnails pane.
