Why do you need the computer name? Then with a click of a button you can either unlock or change passwords. You can do all these from AD itself, too. Location based naming convention?
Wow, old school : Unfortunately that only works in 1 type of environment: bolted down workstations. Add a work from anywhere, dynamic config, role based hardware fleet of laptops and your convention goes out the window. We use the description field in the AD computer objects to store the primary user of the machine. That works best for us but we hardly have any shared computers. For those shared computers we bought some good tamperproof printable labels and stuck those on.
I use this but it doesn't say if it's locked out its really a glorified net user script. I was looking through all the great ideas and options mentioned in the thread and have to admit I would use physical stickers too. One more option that was not mentioned here yet would be changing the user's avatar to a pic with a machine name.
Unlike the lock screen background image, this can be done on the fly. I like the avatar idea, but would that not be part of the user's roaming profile? Or would you create a startup script to generate and replace the picture at each logon with fresh info?
If you're on a vpn with dynamic addressing you may need a way to change the picture in realtime every couple of seconds. But if hostname is good enough which it should be , then it could work quite well.
You can pinpoint the automated script to certain EventIDs related to VPN or networking changes and run it to change the avatar. While I don't know the answer to the OP, we use stickers on the top of machines right in front of the user. As we're an SMB with around users, we just use Blue dymo labels and ask the user their computer number.
As our users rarely move around unless they have an issue, we also use the description in the computer account within AD and can look it up. Lastly, there's always the "other user" and entering.
We have asset tag stickers on all our workstations. Workstations get a name of user initials and the 5 digit asset tag number. So its really easy to figure out the name of the workstation without logging in.
For the IP address, we do a nslookup but of course that requires a login from somewhere. Which could be done from a tablet or something connected to the wifi. Find the most recently modified file and that's the computer they're using. An asset tag sticker on the box. A database with hosts names, mac addresses, ip addresses, employee assigned to and any other information.
Change host names. Change database. Asset stickers remain through EOL unless they get peed on or defaced. We then print a new Asset Tag sticker ie address label in most cases. The computer name is easy to get from the login screen with Windows 10, as someone described earlier.
Clicking the button that says "How do I sign into another domain? I know it doesn't answer the proposed question, but it is an easy way to get the information easily from someone who is not very I will also throw my vote in fro asset tags. My organization uses them, and we keep a naming convention.
We need to know where they are based out of, what type of computer is having the problem, and the 4-digit asset tag number. All of that is easy to know, and generally no one has an issue with it. The asset tags are also not repeated in the 4 digits, so we couldn't have a laptop and a desktop both be ''.
If the user is unsure the type of computer, we can still work with it. You can also purchase custom asset tags that do not easily come off. That way if you have a mobile laptop, scraping against a desk from constant moving will not be an issue.
On a more important note: knowing the computer name isn't necessary to unlock a users AD Account. The callers username is far more important I think a lot of us are still curious about why the user would need to tell the tech support person the computer name or ip address for a locked account?
Maybe we're misunderstanding the situation? Alot of our employees work in a call center and to say they aren't savvy at all would be putting it nicely.
While I can't speak for everyone else here that's what I thought you were talking about the user locking themselves out of their account. I think for the 1st time in my life a random comment on a thread actually changed my mind.
You're right it makes no sense. I wouldn't display any details like that on a lock screen. Lock screen is there to keep information private imo. I would use a mix of Asset Tags and a Register to find the details of that machine.
I cannot tell you how many rolls of label tape we used. The connectoids only work with computers on the old network. If the IP address you noted above begins with Create VPN connection on a home Windows computer.
